Youth Peace-Building

Conflict and instability cause significant setbacks or even reverse decades of progress in areas that are key to a community’s future, like economic development, public health, equal access to water and food. Communities experiencing conflict have higher rates of poverty in comparison to more stable communities. By 2030, it is estimated that two-thirds of the world’s poorest people will live in conflict-affected areas.         Key Initiatives: Youth sensitivity
  • Create a sense of belonging by encouraging youth to be part of community leadership and decision-making.
  • Support positive self-identity by emphasizing the youth’s role as an important factor in the household.
  • Develop a sense of purpose by engaging youth in meaningful work based on practical experience, such as an apprenticeship, internship, service learning, or volunteerism
  • Strengthen bonds between youth and their community by promoting youth leadership in activities related to environmental protection, climate-smart agriculture practices, or advocacy for youth rights.
Youth inclusivity
  • Young people have great desires for a future free from violence and have distinct ideas of what peace should look like, even if they have never experienced a life without conflict.
  • Create space for youth to engage in political processes
  • Access to education is fundamental for facilitating young people’s positive engagement in peace-building
